From Humble Beginnings to a Life of Purpose

Growing Up: Dreams Against the Odds

I grew up in a family where three meals a day were a luxury. Our existence was hand-to-mouth, always teetering on the edge of financial ruin. Despite these hardships, I was a rare child in school, driven by a clear vision of a better life.

In the year 2000, attending college was an impossible dream for me. After numerous attempts, I finally secured admission to a government-aided college. The memory of my mother pledging her jewellery, worth a mere Rs. 2000, to support my education is still vivid. My dream was to become a Chartered Accountant (CA), to study hard, lift my family out of poverty, and provide them with the support they needed.

However, the CA program required three years of practical experience, which I couldn’t afford due to my family’s financial needs. Reluctantly, I shifted to ICWAI as an alternative path.

My parents, despite our financial struggles, ensured we received a good education. My brother became the breadwinner at a very young age, supporting our family, while my dreams became our family’s hope for a better future. I worked hard, excelled in school, and gained admission to a prestigious college in Chennai, enrolling in a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) program on a full scholarship—the only way we could afford it.

My parents pledged their lifelong savings to cover my tuition, while my brother continued to support the family. Survival was our constant reality.

My 20s: Navigating Uncertainty

In college, I performed exceptionally well, yet something felt amiss. Tough conversations with myself revealed my aptitude for accounting, leading me to finish college and abandon the CA program. At 23, I had no clear plan, no savings, and no financial backing.

From 2003 to 2007, I pursued a Master’s in Commerce and registered for ICWAI, which no longer required articleship. Our only asset was the hope that I would make something of my life. In 2004, I met my wife, whose unwavering support transformed my path to success.

In 2008, a referral from a college friend led me to a job in Dubai. After two rounds of interviews, I moved to Dubai, marking a pivotal moment in my life.

I joined Specialist Services as an assistant accountant, then moved to Abu Dhabi as a project accountant in 2010, seizing a significant opportunity.

By 2011, I became a full-time finance manager at Emrill Services, eventually rising to Financial Controller and Finance Director roles across the UAE. I completed my ICWAI and MBA while working. In 2016, I relocated to Oman as a country controller, managing operations in Oman and Mauritius, gaining valuable oil and gas construction experience. My journey brought me back to the UAE in 2020, where I joined as the Accounting Head for the Ras Al Khaimah Government, overseeing prestigious projects like SAP implementation and cash-to-accruals conversion.

These 16 years in the UAE taught me invaluable lessons. The Middle East became my second home, providing financial freedom to support my family. I take pride in what I’ve achieved.
